29th Anniversary Dinner July 8, 2013

CROATIAN CANADIAN CULTURAL CENTRE of CALGARY 29th Anniversary Dinner July 8, 2013

IMG_01On Sunday, July 8, 2013 we celebrated the 29th Anniversary of the opening of our Centre. We started our afternoon with the singing of both the Canadian and Croatian national anthems performed by our special quests Klapa Strofa and Klapa Kroata.
Vice-President, Joseph Sosa, welcomed everyone in attendance and thanked the presidents and members of the following groups for their continued support: The Croatian Seniors, the Croatian Radio Programs, Mountainview Sports Society, The Croatian Folklore Group and the Croatian Soccer Club. He welcomed the new groups Klapa Strofa and Klapa Kroata who will perform for us after dinner. We are also happy to have Hrvatske Zlatne Zice here today to play for us.

This Centre serves to preserve our national identity in Canada. It was built as a place of Croatian culture and tradition where the Croatian language is spoken and taught to younger generations. This is the place where we celebrate our national purpose and pride and where we fly the Croatian and Canadian flags. I would like to extend a special thanks to the Croatian Peasant Party of Calgary and all other Croatians who helped to build this beautiful Centre for all of us to enjoy.
We all enjoyed a delicious meal of prime rib and baked chicken and roasted potatoes with all the vegetables and salads prepared by our wonderful kitchen staff. Special thanks to Father Domin Vladic for saying grace and always being there for us.
We were also honored to welcome our Minister of Citizenship and Immigration, Jason Kenney, and Minister Lynne Yelich to our festivities today.

Minister Kenney spoke to us about his visit to Croatia last year and he mentioned how much he enjoyed it and how beautiful Croatia is. It is through the hard work of Minister Kenney and Minister Yelich that Croatians can now visit Canada more freely without a Visa.
Our good friend and member, Brian Lee, former Alderman and MLA, also joined us for our special celebration today.
After we all enjoyed our meal we were entertained by the Croatian Golden Strings and Klapa Strofa and Klapa Kroata. They performed a variety of traditional Croatian music which was very much enjoyed by everyone in attendance.
We will now look forward and plan for our 30th Anniversary next year.

Ann Sosa
