Review after 0-0 in Azerbaijan

Croatia coach Niko Kovač tried to shield his players from criticism after a 0-0 draw in Azerbaijan, regarded as a disappointment in some quarters.  “Against Norway in Zagreb, every shot we had went in; this time, the ball just didn’t want to go in,” he said. “Azerbaijan defended well – they played bravely and fought hard. That’s football. I can’t blame the players. They battled well in this heat and it’s a shame at least one shot didn’t go in.”

Luka Modrić, however, was in subdued mood, saying: “We didn’t achieve what we came to do. We were not as good as we should be, although we created several good chances. This was not the real Croatia; we need to see what went wrong and prepare for the Norway game.”
